A 36-centimetre stool with a padded seat and one round door at the front, built so a person can sit on it and a cat can live in it. For thousands of years people sat on top and cats sat underneath. This makes it official.
Fit
Thirty-six. Forty-one. And one sixteen-and-a-half.
We did not start from a chair. We started from a cat going somewhere it was not invited: under the table, behind the sofa, into the box the lamp came in. We drew a hollow around that, put a seat on top so the hollow would be allowed in the living room, and cut one door.

The door
One circle. Always one.
There is one opening, 16.5 centimetres across, on the front. The back is closed. The sides are closed. A cat does not want a second exit; it wants a wall at its back and a view of the room. Sixteen and a half centimetres is wide enough for a head and shoulders, and narrow enough that nothing larger follows.
You may sit. You may not enter.
The seat
The throne has a basement.
The top is a padded cushion in the same colour as the shell, 32 by 35 centimetres, 36 centimetres off the floor. A stool by any measure, made for a person. Sit on it to tie your shoes. Sit on it at the table when the chairs run out. Whoever is underneath will not be disturbed, and will not pretend otherwise.
The true owner never needs to sit. It only needs to go in.

Care
Once round with a cloth.
The shell is a single moulding of smooth, hard plastic. Nothing for fur to catch on, nothing to take apart, nothing that remembers a claw. A damp cloth, once round the lobes, and it is new again. The fabric seat takes a brush.

Craft
Three parts. Two owners.
- ShellOne moulding, fluted in vertical lobes, wider at the base than at the seat so it will not tip when it is climbed.
- SeatA padded cushion, 32 by 35 centimetres, upholstered to match the shell.
- DoorOne circle, 16.5 centimetres, cut into the front. The only opening.
